Description Mathieu Segaud 2009-07-06 12:08:50 UTC
Since the last sys-fs/lvm2 change (2.02.48-r1), genkernel builds initramfs's that do contain lvm binaries, but fail to detect any physical volume, any volume group.
Using emergency shell shows that pvscan (symlink to lvm binary) does not exist. But creating it doesn't help, pvscan does not see any physical volume yet.
This occured when upgrading from gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r1 to gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r2.

Previously built initramfs succeeds to detect and activate the volume groups while the new ones don't see anything.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. genkernel --lvm all
2. reboot

Actual Results:
No matching physical devices
/dev/pool0/root: no such device

Comment 2 Mathieu Segaud 2009-07-06 12:25:25 UTC
Reading the genkernel initramfs shell scripts, it seems like the last sys-fs/lvm2 change put the static lvm binary (when USE="static") at /sbin/lvm.static.
As of now, this means that the test ldd /sbin/lvm | grep -q "Not a dynamic executable" will always fail (or succeed) and that genkernel will include the genkernel-compiled version of lvm (not the installed one).

reverting to sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.48, and rerunning genkernel fixes it.
I hesitate at marking it as a duplicate (more of a consequence) of #255196 and #207612

patch that fixes the behaviour in case the statically linked lvm binary is named lvm.static

I checked the behaviour with both sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.48 and sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.48-r1 (which don't use the same names for the static lvm binary)

This behavior is still present on sys-kernel/genkernel-3.4.10.905
with no comment, info about bumping lvm version in genkernel.conf, obviously too old for kernels >=2.6.25, or no info on turning on CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED in newer kernels.
Comment 7 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-12 16:32:30 UTC
This has been applied in git.
Comment 8 Federico Cuello 2009-07-23 13:28:05 UTC
Does anyone know when it is going to be released?
Comment 9 Tais P. Hansen 2009-09-02 10:21:26 UTC
Looks like this is fixed in sys-kernel/genkernel-3.4.10.906.

Thanks for reminding me
