It might help to attach the entire strace output. Also, does it help to move .inkscape/preferences.xml someplace else?
Created attachment 192083 [details] complete strace until startup Actually - upon further investigation - inkscape DOES startup, but it takes about 2 minutes from invocation on command line. Then, operation seems normal. While I can live with that, there certainly is something wrong. Also it's possible, that the culprit is not inkscape itself but one of the libraries it depends on. I did re-emerge cairo and some others and tested with revdep-rebuild, but no change in startup time. Please find attached the complete strace output from invocation until inkscape really appears on screen.
