Newer broadcom-sta ebuilds display a licence dialog. To continue the emerge it needs user interference and it also prevents portage's --jobs function to work properly. The emerge process starts fine, but when the licence dialog would appear, I only see the --jobs process, which is somehow paused. I have to not to use --jobs to compile it. emerge --info Portage 2.1.6.11 (default/linux/amd64/2008.0, gcc-4.3.2, glibc-2.9_p20081201-r2, 2.6.29-gentoo-r3 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.29-gentoo-r3-x86_64-Intel-R-_Core-TM-2_Duo_CPU_T8300_@_2.40GHz-with-glibc2.2.5 Timestamp of tree: Fri, 08 May 2009 11:20:01 +0000 ccache version 2.4 [enabled] app-shells/bash: 3.2_p39 dev-java/java-config: 2.1.7 dev-lang/python: 2.5.4-r2 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r8 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r7 dev-util/cmake: 2.6.2-r1 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.0 sys-apps/openrc: 0.4.3-r2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.6-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.63 sys-devel/automake: 1.5, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.27-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/php/apache2-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cgi-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cli-php5/ext-active/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/sandbox.d /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/home/gentoo/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="ccache distlocks fixpackages parallel-fetch protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch webrsync-gpg" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.osuosl.org/ http://de-mirror.org/distro/gentoo/ http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/gentoo/" LANG="hu_HU.UTF-8" LC_ALL="hu_HU.UTF-8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" LINGUAS="hu" MAKEOPTS="-j4" PKGDIR="/home/gentoo/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/home/gentoo/tmp" PORTDIR="/home/gentoo/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/home/gentoo/overlay" SYNC="rsync://rsync.at.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X acpi alsa amd64 bluetooth bzip2 cli cracklib crypt dbus dri dvd dvdr flac ftp gdbm gif gnome gnome-keyring gstreamer gtk hal howl iconv isdnlog jpeg lcms libnotify midi mmx mmxext mp3 mudflap multilib ncurses networkmanager nls nptl nptlonly ogg opengl openmp pam pch pcre perl png pppd python readline reflection session slang spl sse sse2 sse3 ssl ssse3 sysfs tcpd tiff truetype unicode xinerama xorg zlib" ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic auth_digest authn_dbd authn_default authn_file authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock dbd deflate dir env expires ext_filter filter headers ident imagemap include info log_config mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif so speling status userdir usertrack unique_id vhost_alias suexec" APACHE2_MPMS="worker" CAMERAS="canon fuji ptp2" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse synaptics evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="hu" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="radeonhd vesa radeon" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
This happens for every licence displayed and waiting for user interaction when using portage in parallel mode, whether with --jobs or --load-average. Portage needs a possibility to accept the licences beforehand or via an environment variable.
Well, this would be a handy workaround. The real 'bug' however is Broadcom demanding each user to read the licence before using, as stated on their site at http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php If you find that this keeps you from working effectively with their products, I thinks it's a good idea to let them know, e.g. by http://www.broadcom.com/contact/feedback.php Cheers, Nico

You can find out that there actually is such possibility by examining the eutils eclass. Just add ACCEPT_LICENSE="Broadcom" to your /etc/make.conf.
