Description Justin Eastham 2003-08-12 15:21:04 UTC
IBM 365 desktop, with dual Pentium Pro CPU's (256k cache) clocked at 200Mhz,
128Mb RAM, and the following PCI cards :

Adaptec 2940AU, S3 Trio GFX, and 3COM 3C59x NIC.

If I boot the i686 CD1 with the "doscsi" kernel option, it detects aic7xxx, but
then hangs scanning for "old aic7xxx".

If I omit the "doscsi" option, i686 CD1 boots fine, and when I enter "lsmod",
I can see the aic7xxx module is loaded. However, as soon as I try and format
sda1 (mkreiserfs /dev/sda1), I get the Y/N prompt...select "Y", and the system
hangs.

This is with the latest i686 CD1 of Gentoo 1.4, dated 20030806.

I don't get any of the above problem(s) when I boot from the 1.4 RC4 CD

I've burnt the i686 CD1 ISO (20030806) twice, incase there was a problem with
the CD-R.....no difference.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. At kernel prompt : "smp doscsi noapm dokeymap"
2. Press "space" at prompt for screen res.
3. wait for storage detection......hangs on "old aic7xxx"

Actual Results:
System hung.

Expected Results:
continued to boot up

I propose to swap out the SCSI card for a straight 2940, see if that makes
any difference. Also, for testing purposes, I could dispense with the 3Com NIC.

Could also try booting the "gentoo" kernel, instead of the "smp" kernel.
As last resort, could remove a CPU and its VRM

Assigning to pfeifer so he can look into the kernel issue
Comment 2 Abrahm Scully 2003-10-14 12:53:12 UTC
I get the same results with a single athlon xp and abit kg7 motherboard.

pci adaptec 2940u2w, pci adaptec 2400a, pci sound blaster 16, agp ati video
card, pci intel 10/100 nic

i see aic7xxx load and then the computer hangs when aic7xxx_old tries to
load/probe. x86 livecd 20030911-cd1 booted with option 'doscsi'.

Abit BP6 with AHA2940
gets stuck at "old aic7xxx"

I have the same problem with an Asus P2B-S motherboard containing an Adaptec 2940U2W controller. When booting the gentoo kernel with the doscsi option from the latest live-cd (i686-1.4-20030911-cd1.iso), the aic7xxx module loads fine but the system hangs when trying to load the aic7xxx_old module. Motherboard bios and scsi controller bios are flashed to the latest available versions.

Same problem here. Dell Poweredge 4300 Dual P3/500. Adaptec 7890 Controller. Hangs sytem on boot from x86 Basic LiveCD. Options were "smp cdcache doscsi"

old bug, reopen if necessary
Comment 7 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-25 11:25:11 UTC
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
