Description mrsteven 2009-02-14 12:47:03 UTC
Sometimes my X display gets completely black, only leaving a mouse pointer and a strangely divided (black) screen. The mouse pointer can be moved, though it doesn't behave as it does usually. It looks like the display is divided into four rectangles:

+---+---+
| 4 | 3 |
+---+---+
| 2 | 1 |
+---+---+

Where a regular screen usually looks like this:

+---+---+
| 1 | 2 |
+---+---+
| 3 | 4 |
+---+---+

So when I move the mouse pointer over the right end of rectangle 1 it appears at the left side of rectangle 2, if I move it below the bottom of rectangle 1 it appears in rectangle 3 and so on.
It seems like the tiles get mixed up suddenly and the screen gets blank.

This happens in quite random intervals, sometimes I can work days without problems, sometimes it happens 3 times an hour. Last time it happened when I opened the settings dialog in LyX while playing a YouTube video in Firefox, but I couldn't reproduce that.
Changing AccelMethod from exa to xaa didn't help, neither did disabling ColorTiling.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/messages don't show anything special. Every time it can be fixed by just switching to the console and back, but it is still a bit annoying...

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce

Steps to Reproduce:
No idea, sorry...

xorg.conf

My current xorg.conf

I forgot to mention: Card is a Radeon 9600 Mobility (M10) and I use in-kernel drm of 2.6.27-r8
Comment 2 mrsteven 2009-02-17 19:45:13 UTC
Hmm, x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-8.9.0 does this, too... :-( Does this happen to someone with another driver (and xorg-server-1.5.3) or is this just an ATI related problem?
Comment 3 Jeffrey Gardner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-05-07 02:24:04 UTC
I have never seen that behavior.
Comment 4 mrsteven 2009-05-27 22:54:09 UTC
This has with a high probability something to do with the option "ForceTVOut" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. When I disable that the driver works fine but I don't get a signal on tv out.

Problem still exists with x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.12.2, seems I have to complain upstream anyway... ;-)
