Description loux thefuture 2009-01-28 18:24:37 UTC
initramfs build using genkernel-3.4.10.903 with gentoo-sources-2.6.28-r1 doesn't ask to select a keymap when console=tty1 is set

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.gentoo-sources-2.6.28-r1
2.genkernel-3.4.10.903
3.build a initramfs with uvesafb, v86d, ...
4.boot using grub with a command line with console=tty1 on it

Actual Results:
nothing

Expected Results:
choose a keymap layout

it's a /dev/tty trouble i guess

What's your entire kernel commandline?

initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.28-hh1

and you'll get the same trouble while asking for a pass-phrase from cryptsetup in the initramfs.linuxrc scripts
Comment 4 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-30 13:26:51 UTC
Same trouble? What exactly happens?

what do you mean ?
i just tell here that latest genkernel build initramfs with some trouble in linuxrc like command read while not work (for example to ask for a keymap) when using 'console=tty1'
Comment 6 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-30 13:53:52 UTC
No, you didn't say that. You said "doesn't ask to select a keymap" which told me absolutely nothing.

Please try booting with 'debug' and when it drops you to a prompt, check for the existance of tty* with 'ls -l /dev/tty?'.

hi, with debug i got a debug shell, /dev/tty* exist (0, 1, ...) but i can not see what i prompt at the command line

Hi there,
i got some news,
it's not about genkernel but about kernel 2.6.28 and fbcondecor, the dev release a patch for 2.6.28 :
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/fbcondecor/archive/fbcondecor-0.9.5-2.6.28.patch

hope to see it soon include in the gentoo kernel,
see you
Loux
Comment 9 loux thefuture 2009-03-20 12:33:11 UTC
hi,
i got trouble making keymap arg works in initramfs with modern gentoo.
i add run_shell after setup_keymap in linuxrc,
but i don't get any verbose message like "Loading keympas" or Load keymap ...

i've try genkernel 3.4.10-r2 and 3.4.10-903, gentoo-sources 2.6.27-r8 and 2.6.28-r3

i'm using fbcon, v86d, klibc and boot command line is (in menu.lst) :
vga=0x318 video=uvesafb:1024x768-32,mtrr:3,ywrap splash=silent,theme:natural_gentoo console=tty1 quiet keymap
Comment 10 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-03-20 12:49:47 UTC
Did you try 'dokeymap'?
Comment 11 loux thefuture 2009-03-20 13:45:19 UTC
hi,
"dokeymap" works without framebuffer :
but don't work with it, no switch to verbose mode, and no output when i added run_shell after setup_keymap
(try with genkernel-3.4.10-903 and gentoo-sources-2.6.28-r3)
Comment 12 Xake 2011-02-23 06:36:43 UTC
With regards to comment #8, is this still a problem?
Comment 13 loux thefuture 2011-02-23 21:03:23 UTC
hi, it's seems to work,
but keymap=fr is not eval to dokeymap, don't know why
see you

You mean that you do need to specify both dokeymap and keymap=fr?
That is a know typo, bug filed and patch exists. Just needs to be commited.

Sounds like this commit:
http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=proj/genkernel.git;a=commitdiff;h=a768d85c5ac5c19b02e79a55e5c90e6e157ee0b9

I suppose this bug is fixed already, please report back.

If I do not hear anything within the next two weeks, I may close this bug.
