Description Paul Gover 2009-01-27 10:48:21 UTC
Wanted to emerge net-fs/samba-3.0.33. A Pretend emerge showed it was going to
install xinitd, which I really don't want. I had -swat, but it was being pulled in by ipv6 (which comes from my 2008.1 desktop profile).

Seems a bit odd; if it will work without xinitd in ipv4, I can't help feeling it should work OK with ipv6

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.(using Porthole) emerge -p net-fs/samba -swat
2.
3.
Actual Results:
See xinit in the dependencies

Expected Results:
No xinitd

Portage 2.2_rc23 (default/linux/x86/2008.0/desktop, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.22-vs2.2.0.7-gentoolargemem i686)

Apparently IPv6 in samba is only supported through a xinetd wrapper - maybe that should be documented in metadata.xml?

In that case, I'm surprised inetd or xinitd isn't a prereq for IPv4 - the docs that say you need xinitd say the same problem (a daemon that doesn't listen - wtf?) occurs on IPv4, unless I'm misreading.

Sorry, this is all a bit minor, really, it's just I don't like xinitd waiting to let the hackers in when I connect to the wrong network. :-)

I think this can be closed as invalid. And newer versions samba (at least >=3.4) don't use xinetd for IPv6.

As samba <3.4 is out of tree, this is WONTFIX
