Alright, this is an --as-needed issue. Removing --as-needed from LDFLAGS makes configure happy.
Patches welcome. I don't use --as-needed so it's not going to get fixed without a patch submission.
A fix is in portage. Re emerge dev-games/guichan (after waiting some hours and a resync) as the fix is there. Thanks for report
