Description norbert kamenicky 2009-01-19 23:36:33 UTC
After emerging vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r2 and vmware-server-1.0.8.126538 /etc/init.d/vmware was started (properly), but vmware command fails to start with
this error:

/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgio-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_thread_gettime
Comment 1 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-19 23:51:33 UTC
It looks like you're using a glib library that's too new for vmware-server (which is quite old). Whilst we don't officially support the vmware command in vmware-server (you should be using vmware-server-console, but it's likely to have the same problem), you might try the following work around:

$ VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" vmware

This is most likely an issue with vmware pre-bundling libraries, and then using some system libraries and some bundled libraries. I'm not sure it's something we can really help fix.

Also, when filing bugs, it's requested that you always include the output from the "emerge --info" command...

> It looks like you're using a glib library that's too new for vmware-server

yes, I have the last glib-2.18.4, but few minutes ago I emerged glib-2.16.5, get two errors:

/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_dgettext
/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgio-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_thread_gettime

using glib-2.18.3 gets undefined symbol: g_thread_gettime error

> vmware-server (you should be using vmware-server-console, but it's likely to
> have the same problem),

Yes, it's exactly the same :-)

> you might try the following work around:
> $ VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" vmware

$ VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" vmware
        stops on "waitpid()" syscall

$ VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" vmware-server-console
     fails with g_thread_gettime error

> I'm not sure it's something we can really help fix.

vmware-server worked for me last time about 1,5 years ago,
so it seems I can forget it :-(

Hi,

did you find any solution?
Comment 5 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-28 13:26:16 UTC
I haven't found anything yet, but Norbert might have got something...
Comment 6 Andreas Schürch gentoo-dev 2009-10-06 17:06:15 UTC
It works for me with "VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force vmware-server-console".

HTH, Cheers

Yes and no, I simply switched to VirtualBox (emerge virtualbox or virtualbox-bin)
which works so great, I forgot about vmware completely.

FYI: virtualbox can to use vmware images too.
Comment 8 Andrey Surganov 2010-04-01 20:11:17 UTC
To make it work I used path from here: http://www.monarialx.it/en/vmwareserver

in original "install" file I changed:
from
patch /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/wrapper-gtk24.sh < /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/wrapper-gtk24.sh.diff
to
patch /opt/vmware/server/console/lib/lib/wrapper-gtk24.sh < /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/wrapper-gtk24.sh.diff
 and
from
patch /usr/bin/vmware-server-console < /usr/bin/vmware-server-console.diff
to
patch /opt/vmware/server/console/bin/vmware-server-console < /usr/bin/vmware-server-console.diff
