add mmx to your USEFLAGS
and -mmmx to your CFLAGS

mmx was already in USE and I have never touched CFLAGS yet.

CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe -mmmx"

Like that? It bombs out:

checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

Still using:

$ gcc --version
2.95.3
