and go on for 12 hours on a P4
Comment 1 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-17 22:55:18 UTC
Did your install actually finish after 12 hours, or did it simply hang and you gave up and stopped it after 12 hours?

Also, please post 'emerge --info' output for your system.

And 'misc-funtions' stay at 99.9% of CPU all the time.
Comment 4 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2009-01-18 18:27:11 UTC
Can you use pstree to see if it's misc-functions.sh itself, or a subprocess that's causing it? If you run it with the emerge --debug option then you should be able to see where it's hung (either in bash or a subprocess).

It seems likely to be the scanelf program from the pax-utils package. If the problem is scanelf, you might try rebuilding the pax-utils package. If it's misc-functions.sh itself, you might try rebuilding bash.
Comment 5 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2009-01-18 20:18:31 UTC
I've just realized that the sci-libs/ipp consumes an exceptionally large amount of space, which explains why scanelf would consume more time on this package than others. Part of the problem is that misc-functions.sh calls scanelf multiple times on all of the files, in order to perform various checks.

It's possible to disable the scanelf checks by setting RESTRICT=binchecks in the ebuild. This may be the best solution, assuming that we haven't triggered some sort of infinite loop inside scanelf.

Just tried with RESTRICT=binchecks and all works correctrly!

Do you need that I ask to the other questions in previous post?
Comment 7 Sébastien Fabbro (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-19 22:59:11 UTC
OK, thanks for the tests. I applied the restiction in the ebuild.

It's not really a good solution to restrict binary checks because it ignores these TEXTRELs altogether, and will not warn for other bigger issues. The binchecks restrict should only be used when the package is installing solely non-binary stuff (sources, fonts, graphic) and scanelf would be spending time for no good reason.

All recent versions of ipp do not have RESTRICT=binchecks and I personally do not experience any longer install times. Is this bug still valid with latest portage and ipp?
