The makefile sets CC,CPP variables and seems to be --as-needed unsafe. There's a documentation[1] on how to fix --as-needed failures.

This is available in GURU for some time now (If unfamiliar with the project: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:GURU )

I'm taking over maintainership of it in GURU and don't have any intention at this time of requesting a promotion of it to the main Gentoo tree. It still needs some fixups and testing and the demand isn't there.
