Bug 253011 – net-analyzer/nagios-plugins-1.4.13-r1 - configure hangs at "checking for ICMP ping syntax..."

For nagios-plugins-1.4.13-r1 ping-hang still exists :-(  similar to Bug 44382.
Begin emerging nagios-plugins, and after a few screens-ful of Checking, we screech to a halt:

 checking for ICMP ping syntax...

Please - Can a fix for this (nagios-plugins within a vserver-guest) be incorporated in the standard portage-tree?  There is no net-lo / 127.0.0.1 existing in a vserver-guest...
