Description Jason Borden 2008-12-19 10:41:26 UTC
glibc-2.9_p20081201 seems to have changes in the popen function call in such a way that it is causing postgresql's internal version checking to fail. Specifically I have tested it with postgresql-server-8.3.5. The initdb executable and the pg_ctl executable called by emerge --config and the the init.d script respectively, are failing saying they cannot find the "postgres" executable in the appropriate directory. This error message is false however, as it actually does find the executable, but is not receiving the information it wants when it tries to run postgres -V in a popen function and is instead receiving a NULL value. I don't know if this is how glibc is going to behave in the future and postgres needs to change their code, or if it's an unintentional bug caused by the recent code changes in glibc's popen function, but the end-user is left in a bad situation. I'm not sure how many other packages are affected by the same popen issue, but there was atleast one other in the database so far.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install glibc-2.9_p20081201
2. Try starting postgresql-8.3 or doing a post installation --config
3.

Actual Results:
starting postgresql or creating the initial database environment fails

Expected Results:
start postgresql or properly create the initial database environment

Perhaps as a side note, glibc ebuild maintainers my want to put in some kind of iknowwhatimdoing USE flag so users can force a downgrade of glibc without editing the ebuild; should something unwanted occur like this.

Thanks for the report; please post your 'emerge --info', and then we can ask the toolchain team to have a look.
Comment 2 Jason Borden 2008-12-21 00:28:26 UTC
I've reverted back to glibc-2.7-r2 so that I can run postgresql, but otherwise here is my emerge --info:

The Description is a bit vague (and so is the Summary).
Comment 4 Jason Borden 2008-12-22 21:44:14 UTC
What would you like clarified?
Comment 5 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2008-12-23 03:07:21 UTC
rather than describe things at a high level, please post the actual C code that is being run ...
Comment 6 Jason Borden 2008-12-23 06:01:59 UTC
reinstalled glibc-2.9_p20081201 again for more testing, and this time the bug was no longer preset. I must've had something wrong with my last glibc build that caused it to fail. Chaninging bug to invalid
Comment 7 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2008-12-27 03:01:11 UTC
it's a real issue, but a dupe
