Description Benjamin Collins 2003-07-22 08:29:57 UTC
when portage updated a few packages of mine, it placed several ._cfg* files in
/etc. In this case, at least one of these cfg updates made no changes _except_
to destroy my config changes. For example, the ._cfg0000_group file that I just
received didn't change anything over the last update, except that it would have
removed the groups that I have added by hand (or that other apps have added) and
it would have removed me from the groups my username is in.

Why include such a cfg update?

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge <something>
2. etc-update
3. compare interactively and see what I mean

Expected Results:
the .cfg files that I'm talking about shouldn't exist.

I've experienced this quite a bit, too. Found out the hard way that this effectivly reverts /etc/fstab to the way it was before i had editted it for Gentoo (ie, /dev/ROOT, /dev/BOOT).

etc-update can be a very dangerous tool to use blindly!
