Following the Tex Live 2007 guide as recommended by the newsletter, I run into the block mentioned above. Unmerging the latex-unicode seems to do the trick for now. Maybe the "don't panic" section of the Tex Live guide can be updated? What are you suggesting to add? I'll certainly not add and maintain a list of blockers that have to be removed in the doc.

Usually it is safe to unmerge these packages. If in doubt, ask. e.g. by filing a bug report or by contacting the gentoo tetex upgrade mailing list" with maybe a "code" section showing how to unmerge a package to be complete

latex-unicode should be treecleaner, current version is 11 years old and we've had a lot of texlive updates since then :)
