Description Toralf Förster gentoo-dev 2008-11-16 10:07:40 UTC
Today I synced with :

$> emerge --sync && emerge --nospinner --newuse --update --ask --verbose --deep --tree --with-bdeps=y world

got :

[ebuild     U ] app-admin/sudo-1.6.9_p17 [1.6.9_p16] USE="pam -ldap -offensive (-selinux) -skey" 580 kB
[nomerge      ] net-fs/nfs-utils-1.1.3  USE="tcpd -kerberos -nonfsv4"
[ebuild     U ]  dev-libs/libevent-1.4.7 [1.4.4] 477 kB

but emerge stopped with :

 *   Applying sed-1.5.6.patch ...
>>> Source unpacked.
 * The ebuild phase 'unpack' has exited unexpectedly. This type of behavior
 * is known to be triggered by things such as failed variable assignments
 * (bug #190128) or bad substitution errors (bug #200313).

After that I continued with :

$> emerge --nospinner --newuse --update --ask --verbose --deep --tree --with-bdeps=y world --resume --skip-first
* --tree is currently broken with --resume. Disabling...

which updated the sudo package correctly. Now I made a :

$> emerge --nospinner --newuse --update --ask --verbose --deep --tree --with-bdeps=y world

and dev-libs/libevent-1.4.7 was build fine !?!

Reproducible: Always

This usually happens when a) bash crashes or b) /dev is missing some basic node

Er, so it isn't reproducible?

What shell do you use as root?

Not with this package, but it happens sometimes while emerhing a apckage - and I never experienced a bash crash during my normal work.

> What shell do you use as root?
n22 ~ # bash --version
GNU bash, version 3.2.33(1)-release (i686-pc-linux-gnu)

I am also suffering this problem sometimes, but I haven't reported it because it occurs randomly with random packages and in three different systems, and I don't know how to reproduce it :-(

Isn't there any way for getting more info when emerge fails with this error? Thanks

It's not really emerge that's failing, but bash. It's simply exiting unexpectedly. You can try rebuilding app-shells/bash. It could be a hardware problem. Try running memtest.
Comment 10 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2008-11-22 20:39:51 UTC
OK, thanks, I will try :-)

Hhm, but b/c the next emerge was done fine I don't think that this happens.

Comment 12 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2008-11-27 19:38:44 UTC
Bug 205044 was an entirely separate issue.

This bug is more similar to bug 244979, bug 247100, and bug 248469.
