The unstable version in portage (tilp-6.79) also fails to compile for me.

I can confirm this, at least with version 6.76.

Can you post your emerge --info?  Below is mine.

Could you post the command that triggered the error,
cause I get the feeling it's something along the lines of
GTK_DISABLE_DEPRECATED.

Oops.  I guess this is an old issue, and there's a patch for it attached to the original bug.  I guess nobody is interested enough in this package to apply the patch to the ebuild and resolve the issue!
