Today i wanted to start my gentoo box with the interactive mode but it dosen't work. Nothing happen when i press the "i" button except i'll get many "i" on my screen ;) The Problem in this case is that i have a kernel where the usb-Support is compiled as modul. With a kernel where the usb-support is direct compiled in the kernel the interactive mode works perfectly. But i tooks a long time to find this out. A short information in the rc.conf and/or in the OpenRC Migration Guide would be nice. The specific Kernel Options is: Device Drivers --> [*] USB-support --> <*> Support for Host-side USB <*> EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support The last 2 options must be include in the kernel, otherwise the interactive mode dosen't work. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. build a kernel where the options "Support for Host-side USB" and "EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support" are compiled as modul 2. reboot 3. try to start gentoo in the interactive mode ( press "i" ) Actual Results: interactive mode dosen't work Expected Results: Some info about this "feature" would be nice ;) emerge --info Portage 2.1.4.5 (default/linux/x86/2008.0, gcc-4.3.2, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.25-gentoo-r8 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.25-gentoo-r8 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz Timestamp of tree: Sat, 01 Nov 2008 07:02:01 +0000 app-shells/bash: 3.2_p33 dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.1.6 dev-lang/python: 2.5.2-r7 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 dev-util/cmake: 2.4.6-r1 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.0 sys-apps/openrc: 0.3.0-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.61-r2 sys-devel/automake: 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.1-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.23-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=core2 -pipe -msse3" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/ terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=core2 -pipe -msse3" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="collision-protect distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo" LC_ALL="de_DE.UTF-8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" LINGUAS="de" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/l ocal --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/portage/local/local-overlay" SYNC="rsync://tunafix/gentoo-portage" USE="X acl alsa berkdb bzip2 cdr cli cracklib crypt cups dbus dri dvd dvdr dvdread exif fortran gdbm gif gpm hal iconv ipv6 isdnlog jpeg kde mad midi mmx mmxext mp3 mudflap ncurses nls nptl nptlonly opengl openmp pam pcre perl png pppd python qt3 qt4 readline reflection sasl sdl session spell spl sse sse2 ssl ssse3 svg sysfs tcp d tiff truetype unicode vorbis x86 xcomposite xinerama xml xorg zlib" ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1 emu10k1x ens1370 en s1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare ds noop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias a uth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav _fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite sete nvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd4 4780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="de" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
Document it in the guide something like this Any hardware required to be used before system fully boots should be compiled into the kernel. So if you boot of XFS, compile it in. USB keyboard? compile it in. Otherwise it won't work as expected.
We already have stuff in our handbooks that say to build absolutely required features into the kernel, not as modules, otherwise the system won't boot. Not a bug anymore.
