Tested, and Works For Me(tm) in a mostly-x86 (stable) system with a single SMART-enhanced laptop hard drive and kernel tuxonice-sources-2.6.25-r7. Thanks!
Works here (amd64 stable). Would it be worth making the ebuild patch the source to include a sensible device blacklist by default? The program only supports ATA devices so there are plenty of things (LVM and MD, at least) which confuse it and which need to be added by the user to the device blacklist.
CCing base-system since they maintain smartmontools, in case they want to pick this up...
from my pov, this tool is ugly (nothing near gnome's HIG guidelines) and I'd be more willing to include tools that lennart wrote a while ago (libatasmart and GUI coming with it).
This should be version bumped to 0.8.1 before being added to the tree (released 11-11-08) It fixes the lvm/md detection problem referenced in comment #3.

I just take a look at 0.8.4 version and I think it's well done and it deserves a place into official overlay. Just my humble opinion.
