Problem with both kde version installed isnt fixed yet (see this bug http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=237718). I can't merge and use any kde3 application like kdevelop because it uses wrong env var. This iusse happened yestarday, after Portage updated kdebase-startkde from version 3.5.10-r2 to 3.5.10-r4. Kde 4.x doesn-t start anymore and kde 3.5 is really messed up. It also start kde 4.x apps in 3.5 env
Which version of kde4 are you using? I have installed the 4.1.71 snapshot from kde-crazy without kdeprefix. The problem with messed kde3 (plasma was started with kicker) I solved it by commenting out of line KDEDIRS="/usr:/usr/local:/usr" in /etc/env.d/43kdepaths-4.2 Now plasma doesn't start in kde3, but there are still some issues, like missing highlights in kate3. Probably collision with kate4 :-(
