Description Juergen Rose 2008-10-21 07:55:09 UTC
emerge -vuDN world is locked because of
"net-misc/mDNSResponder" is blocking net-dns/avahi-0.6.23

I also tried the hint http://www2.juicydata.com:8888/content/gentoo-avahi-and-mdnsresponder-blocking-each-other-fixed, i.e. setting the avaho USE flag for kde-base/kdelibs and reemerging kdelibs-3*. But it did not help.

emerge -pvuDNt world shows me that kde-meta-4.1.2 wants to have mDNSResponder.
root@condor:/root(53)# emerge -pvuDNt world
...
[nomerge ] kde-base/kde-meta-4.1.2 USE="-accessibility" [0]
[nomerge ] kde-base/kdenetwork-meta-4.1.2 [0]
[nomerge ] kde-base/kdnssd-4.1.2 USE="-debug -kdeprefix" [0]
[ebuild N ] net-misc/mDNSResponder-107.6-r5 USE="java -debug -doc" 0 kB [0]
...
which is blocked by avahi. If I remove the avahi USE flag for kdelibs and do
'emerge -C avahi' than 'emerge -pvuDNt world' shows me that gnome wants to have
avahi.
root@condor:/root(10)# emerge -pvuDNt world
...
[nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-2.22.3 USE="cdr cups dvdr esd ldap mono -accessibility" [0]

...
[nomerge ] net-misc/vinagre-2.24.1 USE="-debug -test" [0]
[ebuild N ] net-dns/avahi-0.6.23 USE="dbus gdbm gtk ipv6 mono python -autoipd -bookmarks -doc -howl-compat -mdnsresponder-compat -qt3 -qt4 -

I also tried to set the mdnsresponder-compat flag for avahi:
root@condor:/root(13)# emerge -pvuDNt world
...
[ebuild U ] gnome-extra/gnome-games-2.24.1 [2.24.0] USE="X guile opengl -artworkextra -debug" 18,287 kB [0]

[nomerge ] net-misc/vinagre-2.24.1 USE="-debug -test" [0]
[ebuild N ] net-dns/avahi-0.6.23 USE="dbus gdbm gtk ipv6 mdnsresponder-compat mono python qt3 -autoipd -bookmarks -doc -howl-compat -qt4 -test" 0 kB [0

I just found that my bug is probably a duplicate of bug 243004
Comment 3 Timo Gurr (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-21 08:32:02 UTC
You should re-emerge avahi with USE="mdnsresponder-compat" to satisfy the needs of kde-base/kdnssd-4.1.2. After that re-emerge kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.10-r2 with USE="avahi" and if you still get a blocker post the output of emerge -pvuDNt world after you did the above.
Comment 4 DEMAINE Benoît-Pierre, aka DoubleHP 2008-10-23 01:22:31 UTC
Juergen, yes this is an old problem; somehow your bug is duplicate of bug #175808 ... and this mDNSresponder vs Avahi is an old problem we often see in this BTS.

http://bugs.gentoo.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr&short_desc=mDNSResponder+avahi&long_desc_type=substring&long_desc=&bug_file_loc_type=allwordssubstr&bug_file_loc=&status_whiteboard_type=allwordssubstr&status_whiteboard=&keywords_type=allwords&keywords=&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=RESOLVED&bug_status=VERIFIED&bug_status=CLOSED&emailassigned_to1=1&emailtype1=substring&email1=&emailassigned_to2=1&emailreporter2=1&emailcc2=1&emailtype2=substring&email2=&bugidtype=include&bug_id=&votes=&chfieldfrom=&chfieldto=Now&chfieldvalue=&cmdtype=doit&order=Reuse+same+sort+as+last+time&field0-0-0=noop&type0-0-0=noop&value0-0-0=

This is more specifically duplicate of bug #176827

The fix to workaround this depends on your conf. I usually emerge -C both, what allows to emerge them individually, directly to the latest version. Other wise, you will have to find a combination of flag so that you wont pull both in (solution I choosed, and recommend in your case).

Please close DUPLICATE, or INVALID.
Comment 6 Mathieu Z 2008-10-24 23:48:46 UTC
add USE=avachi fixed it for me.
