Description redneb 2008-10-19 13:46:47 UTC
When both the CONFIG_VMI kernel option and the related option in VMware workstation 6 are enabled then the guest system freezes at a random point during the boot process. This doesn't happen when the guest is running gentoo-sources-2.6.24* or vanilla-sources-2.6.25*.

Reproducible: Always

That's really odd, could you please try this under gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r2?

I can't think what patches might have made it into the gentoo-sources-2.6.25 to cause such an outcome...

Could you please just state exactly which version of gentoo-sources-2.6.25 you used, and what version of vmware-workstation you have installed? Also, please provide the output from "emerge --info", since it's always very useful. Thanks... 5:)

I did some further testing and it seems that it also has to do with the host kernel. I tried several combinations of host/guest kernel and I got the following odd results:

host kernel guest kernel works?
gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 YES
gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r8 NO
gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r2 NO
gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 vanilla-sources-2.6.25.17 NO
gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r8 gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r8 NO
gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r8 gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r2 NO
gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r8 vanilla-sources-2.6.25.17 YES
gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r2 gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r8 NO
gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r2 gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r2 YES
gentoo-sources-2.6.26-r2 vanilla-sources-2.6.25.17 YES

I cannot see any pattern in the above results. I'm using vmware-workstation-6.0.5.109488.

Here's the "emerge --info" on the host:

Is this still happening with more recent versions of vmware-workstation and/or the kernel?

If not, please resolve!
Comment 4 redneb 2010-07-14 21:47:52 UTC
I have not been using vmware-workstation for the last few months but I did not experience this problem with newer kernels (>=2.6.27 if I remember correctly).
