Description Michal Januszewski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-12 21:15:00 UTC
I upgraded to kde-4.1.2 by installing the @kdebase-4.1 set and found that the new version isn't working. There seem to be multiple problems with it (although it's possible that they have a common source):

- When I start a 'kde-4.1' X session, I see the splash screen and when it finishes, I'm left with a grey checkerboard and a KDE mouse cursor. There are no icons, panels or other interactive elements of any kind. The window manager (kwin) seems to be working though (if I start an application, such as xterm, on this display using another terminal it is operational and the window has all the decorations and is working as expected).

- konqueror doesn't work. It displays an info box every few seconds with the following message: "Could not delete file file:///home/spock/.kde4/share/apps/konqueror/autosave/owned_by_1.23.". Deleting this file manually does not help. Trying to browse the hard drive or the web results in a 'Protocol not supported' error message.

- The file dialog doesn't seem to work in any kde-4.1 application. If I start kwrite and try to open a file I get a "URL cannot be listed: <path>" error message.

My emerge --info:

Michal,

please take kdebase-4.1 from your world_sets file and run emerge -uDav @kdebase. Unless you want to be tied to kdebase:4.1, you should emerge the non-versioned set.
Do you have dolphin, kdebase-kioslaves and libkonq installed? Make sure you're running the latest versions of kdelibs and kdebase-startkde for 4.1 (and 3.5 if you have it).

OK, thanks for the hint -- I've switched to @kdebase now.

Yes, I seem to have them all:

[ebuild R ] kde-base/kdelibs-4.1.2-r1 USE="acl alsa bzip2 fam jpeg2k mmx nls opengl semantic-desktop spell sse sse2 ssl -3dnow (-altivec) -bindist -debug -doc -htmlhandbook -kdeprefix -kerberos -openexr -test -zeroconf" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] kde-base/libkonq-4.1.2 USE="-debug -kdeprefix -test" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] kde-base/dolphin-4.1.2 USE="semantic-desktop -debug -htmlhandbook -kdeprefix" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves-4.1.2 USE="bzip2 samba -debug -htmlhandbook -kdeprefix -openexr" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] kde-base/kdebase-startkde-4.1.2-r1 USE="-kdeprefix" 0 kB

I had the same problem on one of my machines. It was caused by wrong permissions of the directory /usr/share/kde4. See bug #241890 and bug #239269.
