I fixed the catalina error by doing 'chmod a+r /etc/conf.d/tomcat'. As for the errors about dependency info these still need a great deal of attention. I have seen these errors with other packages too like when doing /etc/init.d/distcc start. It may be a problem with baselayout-1.8.6.8-r1 since it has happened with more than one package but I may be wrong. Looking forward to receiving feedback on these problems. Many thanks.
