The Gentoo live x86 install cd works fine except when on the final phase when GRUB is being installed. See below the ----- line for the log section. Also as this is a fresh install to a completely zeroed hard drive . For some reason i can not use the "EMERGE grub" terminal command as i am not a " super user ". claimed by gentoo. This is the third download of this release. No problems with similar linux dists such as mandriva. Gentoo 2008 also wipes all the files installed on the HD (cleaning) once the grub error occurs, unless in semi-manual mode where one can choose to leave the files intact. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLI: September 05 2008 19:14:58 - Mounted mountpoint: / GLI: September 05 2008 19:14:58 - Created mountpoint /boot GLI: September 05 2008 19:14:58 - Mounted mountpoint: /boot GLI: September 05 2008 19:53:36 - Stage3 was generated successfully GLI: September 05 2008 19:53:37 - Chroot environment ready. Actual Results: Just try to install Gentoo linux 2008 to the system HD. Expected Results: Same error(s) Yes i attempted to set differing mount points and partitions with the same results.
Emerge function unavailable due to install does not see the person installing as a " super user " Any attempt to enter a password to access the system config will state that the password is invalid, even if the password is correct in every way.
Please try the 2008-r1 liveCD; the original 2008 release has known problems for x86/amd. Also, I recommend http://forums.gentoo.org/ as a really good place for installation help -- for instance, searching on the error from your log "Error listing the kernels in /boot" shows the answer http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-699181-highlight-error+listing+kernels+boot.html *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 230998 ***
