It's a well known problem with recent kernel headers,
those flags were renamed there.
Maybe a tracker bug should be formed (as this has hit a few packages) ?

Fix build with recent kernel headers

Here is a slightly modified version of a patch that I found here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/pld-cvs-commit@lists.pld-linux.org/msg156762.html
Comment 5 Oliver Knodel 2008-11-04 17:10:59 UTC
patch #4 works for me with linux-headers-2.6.27-r2,
it also applies to hwinfo-14.19.

hwinfo-Ebuild using hwinfo-update-vm86.patch

The bug and the proposed fix (hwinfo-update-vm86.patch) worked for me. (gentoo-sources 2.6.27-r7 x86 and hwinfo-4.19)

Please add the patch to portage, since this seemingly didn't happen yet, and close this bug. Just for the sake of it, I added the modified ebuild.
Comment 7 Oliver Knodel 2009-01-19 00:16:26 UTC
hw-info compile fine with patch #4 and ebuild #6, I am using linux kernel 2.6.28.1 . Thank you.
Comment 8 Alexander Goomenyuk 2009-04-01 08:47:18 UTC
This patch also works for me (sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.28-r1 & 2.6.27-r2).

Could somebody please add this patch to portage tree?

I still get this error too. Is it going to get patched?
Comment 10 C W Rose 2009-05-19 12:25:05 UTC
This bug still exists with 13.28; as a quick fix I added a header
file containing the missing masks to the project directory, and then
patched i10_v86.c to include the header. This seems the quickest
and most permanent solution, but it would be nice if it were part
of the package.
Comment 11 Alexandr 2009-06-10 21:30:00 UTC
The patch work fine! Please commit changes to official portage!

I'd be proposing QA masking and removal of the package, if Robin does not care about this package any longer.
Comment 14 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-07-03 16:18:37 UTC
Aren't a simple version bump enough for fixing this?
Comment 15 Robin Johnson archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2009-07-03 23:21:04 UTC
flameeyes: it's used by some of the releng media, but it's a major PITA to maintain. The build system appends contents to an ar file in nearly every subdir, so it's dangerously parallel unsafe (concurrent access to the file leads to some parts missing).

Then at the end they generate an .so from the .a, as well as using the .a to generate some binaries.

The package is still needed, but the buildsystem requires a serious overhaul.
I might try it with 16.0 this evening.
Comment 16 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2009-07-13 15:30:05 UTC
This package has now become uninstallable for users of glibc-2.10, as linux-headers-2.6.23-r3 no longer builds with it.

(In reply to comment #15)
If the package cannot be fixed, please at least adjust the versions in the dependencies.
Comment 17 Richard H. 2009-09-22 15:01:49 UTC
The patch works for me (x86 stable with everything on newest stable version).
Why isn't it committed yet?
Comment 18 Robin Johnson archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2009-09-22 21:40:59 UTC
The patch is only part of the problem. I've got other setups where it doesn't compile at all, and I haven't found the time to fix all of it.

I'll attach the work here, but it's still not quite complete, just to show Diego that it's not going away yet.

This patch is part of the official portage tree. See /usr/portage/sys-apps/hwinfo/files/

BTW, the ebuild for version 16.0 works for me after both the tree's current stable (13.28) and unstable (14.19) failed for me (see bug 281891).
I vote for adding the ebuild hwinfo-16.0 to the official tree as unstable (~).

build log for new ebuild

Sorry about the dupes.
The new ebuild fails with missing symbols. Am I missing a -l option somewhere?
Comment 28 James C. Georgas 2009-11-19 20:49:34 UTC
Looks like it was a parallel make issue. If I continued the build from the
point of failure using ebuild instead of emerge, it completed successfully.
Also, setting MAKEOPTS to -j1 allowed emerge to succeed from start to finish.

So, it's working for me now. Program runs and spews much data at me :D

Robin, I'm tired. This problem has been around since September 2008 and you still haven't found time to get this fixed. There are bumps to do, but they are not yet in Portage.

Get it fixed and unmask it if you want; if you don't care about getting this fixed, don't stop the last riting.

QA spoke.

Yes, it's compiles ok with -j1 in "FINAL pass" emake.
Thanks for new version ebuild.

16.0 in the tree now. That last parallel bit is not fixable.

Wasn't able to install 13.28. Added sys-apps/hwinfo to package.keywords. It installed and works fine.

solved with unmasking of 16.0 against 13.28
