This bug is related to bug #235259. 

In the x86 Gentoo handbook is the follwoing error:

<snip>Code Listing 3.9: Installing the kernel

# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-2.6.24-gentoo-r5

Now continue with Kernel Modules.<snip>

should read:
