While librsvg currently depends on full GTK+, all it really needs is gdk-pixbuf. This can be built separately. Please see the attached sample patch (it drops the ATK dependency and creates a none target that only builds pixbuf, 87 lines). Spoke to mraudsepp on IRC, who intends to discuss this with upstream.

Ping, any updates on this topic? Was upstream contacted, is there an open bug? Thanks
no upstream report, no chocolate :D
I've posted this patch to the GNOME Bugzilla in hopes that it will help things. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103708

oh man... nothing is going on on upstream :( I think I'll just take the patch, because I won't install X11 plus GTK only to get mediawiki svg support...
This has just been fixed upstream.
Not only is this fixed upstream, but we will *have* to create an ebuild for gdk-pixbuf since it's been completely ripped out! Yay! http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=16ecf558321030a12795cdd0b67ebbdc198d5c43
Fixed versions are already in the tree, for now package.masked but they will be unmasked in the near future (for Gnome 2.32)
