Description Rafael Azevedo 2008-08-05 01:36:43 UTC
I'm trying to install CbQ on a xen domU server and it just wont compile the kernel headers.

Here is the output for emerge.

master1 sched # emerge cbqinit

master1 sched #
==============================================

I've also tried to install it on dom0 unit and it gives a lot of erros on dmesg, as you can see:

rebel / # /etc/init.d/cbqinit start
 * Starting cbqinit ...
FATAL: Error inserting sch_cbq (/lib/modules/2.6.21-xen/kernel/net/sched/sch_cbq.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

 * ERROR: cbqinit failed to start
rebel / #

I don't know what else to do. I've searched on the internet and found no solution for this problem. I aint sure if this is a bug or not, but I guess it should've worked.

Thank you.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge cbqinit

Expected Results:
I expect it to work.

Linux XEN domU box and dom0 unit.

You seem to simply need to update your system target (or alternatively, simply `emerge -1 lzma-utils'). It has nothing in particular to do with cbq or xen...
Comment 2 Rafael Azevedo 2008-08-05 02:12:56 UTC
I did run emerge -1 lzma-utils and the error is still the same.

Comment 5 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-08-05 06:30:57 UTC
You should update your domU portage to get kernel-headers lzma archive to install. The dom0 one is much newer and that's why you managed to finish the install on dom0. Following Jeroen's suggestion to do a system update on the domU would fix problems like this...

However, you probably need to rebuild the dom0 kernel with QoS features turned on -- what symbols are complained about when you run 'dmesg' after you see that error message?

FATAL: Error inserting sch_cbq
(/lib/modules/2.6.21-xen/kernel/net/sched/sch_cbq.ko): Unknown symbol in
module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
**CBQ: failed to load module sch_cbq
Comment 6 Rafael Azevedo 2008-08-05 12:16:03 UTC
I did run portage --sync in both domU and dom0 servers.
I've also compiled kernel with CBQ and QoS support.
Still get the same error.

I really dont know what else to do.

Updating your system means doing something like `emerge -vuaDN world' - your sys-apps/portage is ancient, for instance. (`emerge --sync' merely updates the scripts that update the installed software.)

Don't make me throw the Handbook at you! ;-)
Comment 8 Rafael Azevedo 2008-08-05 17:55:51 UTC
Yes, but when I try to do the emerge world, it will try to install kernel headers, and we're back the beggning, where the problem started..

Look at this:

How can I fix EPATCH SOURCE????

Try to emerge a new version of portage first, that should solve the linux-headers problem because then portage will know to use lzma-utils for the unpack.

ok I've compiled the domU unit... but cbq seems not to work on that box for some reason... may be because its using a bridge???

on dom0, it gives me this error:
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol tc_classify
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol qdisc_put_rtab
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol unregister_qdisc
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol qdisc_tree_decrease_qlen
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol pfifo_qdisc_ops
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol register_qdisc
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol qdisc_get_rtab

rebel ~ #

even after I runned emerge -1 lzma-utils.
Do I have to run emerge world on dom0 also???

rebel ~ # emerge --info

I runned emerge world on dom0 unit and even after that, I recompiled kernel and I'm still getting the same error message when I try to run cbq...

rebel linux # /etc/init.d/cbqinit start
 * Starting cbqinit ...
FATAL: Error inserting sch_cbq (/lib/modules/2.6.21-xen/kernel/net/sched/sch_cbq.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
**CBQ: failed to load module sch_cbq [ !! ]
 * ERROR: cbqinit failed to start

This is the dmesg error message:
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol tc_classify
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol qdisc_put_rtab
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol unregister_qdisc
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol qdisc_tree_decrease_qlen
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol pfifo_qdisc_ops
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol register_qdisc
sch_cbq: Unknown symbol qdisc_get_rtab

What can I do????

thank you.

Please file a new bug for the problem with using net-misc/cbqinit - the bug that the Summary denotes is a duplicate of bug #207193.

(Hint: modules complaining about missing symbols is usually a sign that you compiled the module against kernel sources other than the ones that produced the kernel you are currently running, which usually means that the /usr/src/linux symlink is wrongly set.)
