The current version of slrn is extremely outdated. Very soon there will be a new "stable" version. The current maintainer has been putting out new pre-versions. Since those support UTF-8 correctly and the outdated version doesn't, it should be updated as soon as possible. Considering how old the version of slrn in portage is and that the new version (which will also be called pre-0.9.9) very likely won't differ a lot from the pre-releases on the download page, it might be a good idea to already include it in portage.
