Updateing to the latest stable on grub seems to remove the /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz but does not replace it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. upgrade grub 2. reboot Actual Results: no splash screen, strange things happen.
I also have display issues with this version. There is no grub menu displayed (just an underscore cursor in upper left). When booting starts, text is very garbled (noisy/unreadable), but then when kernel updates the card during boot, it clears up. I have an ATI Radeon 9250. I suspect grub's low-level drivers are not working correctly for the initial part of the boot.

simple work around was to cp /usr/share/grub/splash.xpm.gz /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz didn't try the emerge --config grub but that probably does close to the same thing. This is pretty much a dupe of #231039 so i will close it. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 231039 ***
I have the same problem here.. was pulling my hair to the garbled text so much, good to know that it's related to the grub issue... I'm on 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G71 [GeForce 7300 GS] (rev a1)
