Hp 9010 using 200.8_beta2 stage3 to compiling kernel 2.6.24-r8 with latest genkernel. The system hanged in the populating udev process after a list of drivers appeared. The lights on and there is no response for any keystroke. The system can be booted up by 2.6.19 on livecd or 2.6.24-r5 on 2008 beta2. Reproducible: Always
Created attachment 159589 [details] kernel config the kernel configure file for the bug
The kernel works with using the same configure on another computer AOpen B165 (p4 2.8e + 865+ MX440 + sata 250g) except Hp nx9010
Does it work with the same config without using genkernel?
tested with genkernel all. It does not work. the same. try make && make modules_install later. the computer is a little bit slow.
It seemed to be a kernel problem but not related to genkernel. when i use udev-115, it has a driver list, which contains some hardware it does not has, such as b44, container...also, when i use udev-119, it stuck in "waiting for uevents to be processed" with no response as before.
I think this is a problem related to udev. It has a driver list when using the old version of udev, but has no list on new version. This computer works with arch,ubuntu,2007.0. I hope this can be fixed in 2.6.25. I will try 2.6.25 later.
Fortunately, Nx9010 can be booted up with "genkernel all" under 2.6.25-r6 and udev. But what causes this problem?! ...Thanks
What udev version/versions did you use for your tests?
(In reply to comment #8) > What udev version/versions did you use for your tests? I think it was 119-r3 ...the stable one, I used it as well as in 2.6.25-r6 which can be booted.
I'm having what sounds to be the same problem but with a kernel I built. I am able to boot fine with gentoo-sources 2.6.25-r6 but not with 2.6.26 or 2.6.26-r1. Actually it has managed to boot a few times with 2.6.26-r1 but is unpredictable and most of the time it hangs at "waiting for uevents to be processed". I'm also using udev-124-r1 on amd64.

I'm also using udev-124-r1 on amd64. which kernel option did you use? I am assuming that the system hanged up by keep searching devices process, which some devices do not exist in it but keeping look for them. Endless loop. By the way, what it the differences between the genkernel made kernel and the make&&makemodule_install kernel. I found that some options appeared in genkernel but not in the tradition way. If i use genkernel config to build with make or make config to build with genkernel, sometimes it failed. Thank you. I hope I can build the kernel simply using genkernel without any headache.

It is only happened in kernel 2.6.24 with "genkernel all" & no matter what version udev is. If i upgrade to 2.6.25 with the same conditioin, it is fine. I think this problem should be fixed in new version kernels & apps.
Should we just mark this as RESOLVED, then?
It doesn't looke like this was ever a problem with gk.
I get this bug on a Pentium II with kernels 2.6.26-gentoo-r9 and 2.5.27-gentoo-r7. It says "Waiting for uevents to be processed ..." and then hangs for a minute and maybe 5 seconds or so. Then the boot continues.
I get this on 2.6.33, udev 1.5.1-r1 I have to keep pressing keys on the keyboard or shaking the mouse to keep things moving. Problem exists even after I start X.
