Description Salvatore Cristofaro 2008-06-17 14:15:15 UTC
Usermode-sources in portage are a bit old.
There are two new patch: one for 2.6.24, the other for 2.6.25.
This patches can be applied at gentoo-sources.

Reproducible: Always

Last patch for 2.6.25 kernel

Last patch for 2.6.25 kernel (from Usermode-linux mailing list)
Working on 2.6.25-r4 gentoo-sources.

skas4 is a host patch, and usermode-sources is intended to be primarily a guest os. I'll take a look, but I *don't* track all the security updates for the kernel sources, so usermode-sources is not a good kernel to run on the host.

Maybe, since guest-only patches appear to be a thing of the past, usermode-sources can become a host-kernel, I'll look into that too.

Yes Daniel, you are right.
Since skas4 is a patch for both guest and host kernels, you may not use usermode-sources anymore. skas4 patch is only for the 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 kernel version (since here) so I don't think usermode-sources contain it.
I guess (and I'm rather sure of that) usermode-sources have the skas3 patch inside, so I suggest you to use vanilla sources + skas4 patch for your guest kernels.
As Daniel said, you may use your gentoo-sources either for the guest and the host, both within the skas4 patch.

Anyway, this is not a bug.

It would be a good thing to have usermode-sources at the last stable version available as well as for the gentoo-sources.
The only one difference would be the skas4.

Do we need sys-kernel/usermode-sources in the tree? It looks like um-sources are provided by vanilla kernel these days: http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/source.html I think it's good idea to drop this package from the tree...
Comment 5 Flavio 2011-04-13 06:48:08 UTC
I agree with Peter. As said many times, also from Salvatore, actually the usermode-sources are old. How can this package be useful?
Comment 6 Daniel Gryniewicz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-04-13 12:27:47 UTC
My personal reason for using UML has long since vanished, so I have no problem removing them. I'll last-rite it.

removed from tree due to age
