Description Tango 2008-05-28 21:48:14 UTC
After updating cups to 1.3.7 on my local area network printing became impossible. Using the cups web interface on my x86 server to install a printer and setting it up for sharing it could only be accessed from the server itself. Printing a test page to the printer from the server was only possible after entering the root password. Printers failed to appear in user accounts anywhere on the network. The printers would show up in the web interfaces of all clients as unpublished even though It appeared on the server as published. Trying to access the interface from a client machine resulted in a 403 FORBIDEN error message. I attempted for several days to make every change possible to the configs and get printing working again.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Emerge net-print/cups-1.3.7-r1 on all machines x86 and amd64
2.Update the config's and set up for network sharing.
3.Restart the cups services on all machines.

Actual Results:
Printing is impossible and printers are inaccessible from the lan.

Expected Results:
Printing and printers work as expected from the server and client machines.

I am using a mixed environment where the server is a Gentoo-x86 local network server, firewall, IP-sharing and Apache2 local web-server, using Gentoo's home router guide and printing documents.

There are 1 Gentoo-amd64-workstation, 1 Gentoo-x86-workstation, 1 Gentoo configured-x86-Dell-laptop clients connected to the network.

Downgrading to net-print/cups-1.2.12-r7 allows printing on the network to return to normal functions.

Ignoring the Gentoo desktop documentation for the CUPS printing guide and simply updating to net-print/cups-1.3.7-r1. Setting up the printer in the cups web-interface on the server. Than editing the cupsd.conf and changing the order of deny, allow to allow, deny in <location>, <location /admin> and <Location /admin/conf> makes printing and remote administration possible. I am concerned about the security risks in this setup, but it seem to work at least for now.

Is this still a problem with net-print/cups-1.3.11-r4 (current stable)?

No it does not appear to be a problem anymore. Cups works well across the local network.
