Description Trevor Bowen 2008-05-01 18:25:17 UTC
Whenever I try to emerge gnome-applets, emerge freezes at the exact same spot during the configuration every time. ... If I upgrade to the unstable version of python and run python-updater, the problem goes away. ... However, if I downgrade back to the prod version of python and run python-updater (which does nothing), the problem reoccurs - again at the exact same spot.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install 2008.0 beta1
2. emerge --sync
3. emerge -uDN world
4. emerge gnome-applets (if not required by step #3)
Actual Results:
emerge freezes very early in the configuration stage at this line:

checking for python module gnomeapplet...

Even Ctrl^C will not break it out. I have to use Ctrl^Z to force the process into background, grep for emerge in ps output, and kill it using the -9 flag.

There are no error or warning messages that I can see.

Expected Results:
I expect it to emerge successfully.

I recently submitted another bug for a similar issue:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=219974

emerge of libkdepim also freezes during early configuration, but it hangs on this line:

>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking parts of kdepim-3.5.8.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/kde-base/libkdepim-3.5.8/work
>>> Unpacking kdepim-3.5-patchset-04.tar.bz2 to /var/tmp/portage/kde-base/libkdepim-3.5.8/work
Symlinking library libkcal under /usr/kde/3.5/lib64/ in source dir
 * Applying libkdepim-3.5-headers_for_knetworkmanager.diff ... <freezes here>

Maybe they are related? Or, just coincidence? I dunno.

Well, I kept doing an "emerge --skipfirst", until my "emerge -e world" was completed. I don't know what was finally rebuilt, but something was eventually rebuilt that made everything else happy.

I am able to emerge gnome-applets and libkdepim with no problems now.

I would love to know what tool was broken and causing this problem, but I guess there is no way to know now.
