Description Chris Lusena 2008-04-28 00:04:47 UTC
While updating my new install, emerge crashed on libgtop-2.22.1 asking for libexpat.so.0 .

I have two .ebuild s for dev-libs/expat in my tree expat-1.95.8.ebuild and expat-2.0.1.ebuild, if I for using expat-1.95.8 I get the following files in /usr/lib

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 156724 Apr 27 21:53 libexpat.a
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root    706 Apr 27 21:52 libexpat.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     17 Apr 27 21:53 libexpat.so -> libexpat.so.0.5.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     17 Apr 27 21:53 libexpat.so.0 -> libexpat.so.0.5.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 128460 Apr 27 21:53 libexpat.so.0.5.0

and if I use 2.0.1 I get

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 157292 Apr 27 21:55 libexpat.a
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root    793 Apr 27 21:55 libexpat.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     17 Apr 27 21:55 libexpat.so -> libexpat.so.1.5.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     17 Apr 27 21:55 libexpat.so.1 -> libexpat.so.1.5.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 128300 Apr 27 21:55 libexpat.so.1.5.2

Also I get a message from emerge to run a program that I do not have here is
the message:

* Please note that the soname of the library changed!
 * If you are upgrading from a previous version you need
 * to fix dynamic linking inconsistencies by executing:
 * revdep-rebuild -X --library libexpat.so.0

expat-2.0.1-ebuild clean up its working directory right away, and I have run
find / search for the program with no luck.

I fix the problem by pointing libexpat.so.0 at libexpat.1.5.2 since my emerge instruction wants to use the 2.0.1.ebuild, but this seems like a kluge which will lead to problems later on. I suspect that there are a few other kluges going on too so hopefully they will all get cleared up. Things I think are a kluge here.

1. libgtop asking for a particulare expat.so version that is not there.
2. expat version not installing what I would expect as .so version e.g. I would expect after installing expat.1.95.8 to see:
    libexpat.so
    libexpat.so.1
    libexpat.so.1.95
    libexpat.so.1.95.8
with the first three pointing to the last, and simularly after installing expat-2.0.1

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
0. have my portage tree
1.emerge dev-libs/expat
2.emerge gnome-base/libgtop
3.

Actual Results:
the second emerge crashes during the config looking for libexpat.so.0

Expected Results:
A successful emerge
