Description Daniel da Silva Ferreira 2008-04-03 22:11:32 UTC
I'm trying to install in Aopen DE896-FL MiniPC
with hardware given in that page
(http://minipc.aopen.com/us/DigitalEngine.htm)
Processor is:
VIA C7
The same happens to the LiveCD
livecd-i686-installer-2008.0_beta1.iso

When booting from usb external cd/dvd drive
system boots into a grub prompt:

"GNU GRUB version 0.96 ...

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing ... TAB list possible command completions.
Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ]

grub>

When I press TAB possible commands show up.
When I introduce one of this comands,
if I hit TAB again I get the following message:

Example:

grub> kernel
ERROR 12: Invalid device requested

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Booting the cd from a usb external cd/dvd drive

Expected Results:
with 2007.0 livecd I was able to boot with no problem.
But after that two problems showed up:
1 - fdisk couldn't recognize the hard drive
kernel version problem
2 - It didn't installed the right driver for the realtek card
it should have installed r8168 has it says in:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
and it didn't!

The problem is with grub.
I made it with isolinux and it's working perfectly!

Please don't close the bug. We need to determine if this is something that we can fix or if we should switch back to isolinux.

look my situation on http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215756

with cdrom and ich9r set ar AHCi i have the problem,
with cdrom and ich9r set IDE i don't have the problem

can grub have some problem with ICH9 in AHCI mode ?

on the same motherboard, cdrom on PATA Marvel don't have the problem.
Comment 6 Michele Schiavo 2008-04-30 18:53:35 UTC
nothing new with amd64 beta2.

grub can't load config also from ICH9 AHCI ODD
Comment 7 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-05-01 17:13:42 UTC
Michele, this bug is about USB, not AHCI. Bug #219359 is about AHCI.
Comment 8 Andy Pettinger 2008-05-02 05:37:04 UTC
Still the same problem with amd64 live-dvd beta2
Comment 9 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-05-02 18:15:10 UTC
OK. Are any of you with a USB CD-ROM available to test some ISO images for me? I'm going to build a few specifically for troubleshooting some of the booting issues.
Comment 10 Michele Schiavo 2008-05-02 19:22:32 UTC
I can test from Marvell Pata or ICH9 AHCI if you want.
Comment 11 Andy Pettinger 2008-05-02 20:06:48 UTC
Yes , if it can help resolve the problem

I have the same problem on amd64 with an ide and a sata disk.
grub offers fd0 hd0 hd1<- my sata disk with gentoo and cd
tabbing (cd completes to (cd) tabbing further gives a disk not found error

find (cd) reboots the mashine

knoppix did boot fine but after canceling my usb dvd burner is not found anymore. when I have it back running I can test images for you and also check the knoppix settings if they use grub

Hi,

I'm having problems booting 2008.beta2-r1 from my USB DVD Drive.

I get as far as seeing this:

Loading stage2

and then it all stops. I don't even get as far as seeing a grub menu :-(

I'm on a VIA EPIA-PD10000 mini-itx board and that has always worked well with isolinux cd's :-)

I'm able to test with my setup if you need help.
Comment 14 Richard Scott 2008-05-20 10:09:06 UTC
I also have a system with a non USB, LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-1635S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive and this errors after trying to read Stage 1 with an 0x80 error and won't boot :-(

I am using a Plextor PX-0716UF USB 2.0 drive attached to a VIA K8M800 motherboard chipset and an AMD64 X2 5600+ processor. May I test your LiveCD on this machine?
Comment 16 Tobias Klausmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-04 17:30:05 UTC
Since we're switching back to ISOLinux for the release media, this problem will quite like be gone then.

I just wanted to confirm this as well, booting to the grub prompt. LG USB cd/dvd burner, ASUS M2N32-SLI DELUXE mb, amd64 X2 6400+ BE. I tried the 2008.0 beta2 LiveDVD, thought about trying a different one but thought to check here first. Do you still need more testing of alternative images, or will the release image be available soon?
Comment 20 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-07-06 17:44:16 UTC
This should be fixed in 2008.0, which is now released.
