This is a known issue. It's due to a bug in grub. Most likely, we won't be able to fix this.

The problem here is that the grub pager appears to be broken in both 0.95 and
0.96. In my test with our 0.95 cdtar in catalyst, the pager works just fine if
you use the 'cat' command from the grub commandline, but if you use it from an
item in the menu, the file you're running 'cat' on just flies by and it returns
you right to the menu.

Couldn't you open it with less instead of cat?

What version of grub is on the livecd copy? You mention the really old .95 and .96 here.
Comment 7 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-04 19:52:22 UTC
We're using an old 0.95 cdtar on the CD, and I tried a 0.96 cdtar I rolled myself a while back. Chris is going to roll a 0.97 cdtar for us to test with.
Comment 8 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-05 02:10:55 UTC
I created a new cdtar from grub-0.97-r5 in the tree, and it still has the pager issue. If you have 'pager on' and then 'cat /boot/help.msg' in the menu, the pager doesn't work. The contents of the file just go flying by.

If you drop to the commandline and use the same commands, the pager works great.

You probably already know this, but beta2 is still affected.

Yeah, we're aware. Thanks

This should be fixed in 2008.0, which is now released.
