During the installation to the hard disks from the 2008.0 Beta 1 LiveCD, Gentoo installation fails with an error being written to the installer log in /var/log/install.failed.log Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Gentoo 2008.0 Actual Results: The installer fails with an error Expected Results: It should install xinit without trouble I am a long-time Debian user and this is my first stab at Gentoo and my first try at reporting a bug I encountered with it. Please be gentle. I reported this as a Blocker since it prevents testing of Gentoo 2008.0 if that is unacceptable, I'm completely unopposed to it being demoted to something more trivial. output of install.log.failed ... gentoo@livecd /var/log $ cat /var/log/install.log.failed GLI: April 01 2008 22:26:59 - Gentoo Linux Installer version 0.6.3 GLI: April 01 2008 22:33:04 - Mounted mountpoint: / GLI: April 01 2008 22:33:04 - Created mountpoint /boot GLI: April 01 2008 22:33:04 - Mounted mountpoint: /boot GLI: April 01 2008 22:42:49 - Stage3 was generated successfully GLI: April 01 2008 22:42:49 - Chroot environment ready. Somebody please attach their /tmp/compile_output.log
(In reply to comment #4) > Somebody please attach their /tmp/compile_output.log > I don't know if this will help, but I encountered the same problem. I was able to install gentoo by not selecting any additional components (and I mean NONE). After I had successfully rebooted to the hard disk, I tried to emerge x11-org and I got an fail to builld error in x11-apps/mkfontscale-1.0.3 (line 49 in ebuild.sh). In fact I was unable to emerge any x11 related packages due to failure to build the mkfonstscale package.

Are any of you using the installer to install over an existing Gentoo install without reformatting the partitions?
Also, can any of you try to reproduce this with debug turned on? All you have to do is open up a terminal and run 'installer --debug', and the install.log will get *very* verbose. Attach that file after the install fails.

If you cannot resolve it, please submit a bug report (after searching to make sure it's not a known issue and verifying you didn't do something stupid) with the contents of /var/log/install.log and /tmp/installprofile.xml and the version of the installer you used. Well, I tried the i686 LiveCD and it installed without problems.
That confirms my theory about it only being an issue on amd64. However, I still don't have any more information to track it down until I get an install.log with debug enabled.

Created attachment 148900 [details] compile_output.log from failed install After the install failed, I just sent this file here.
I already know what the error is. I don't need any more compile_output.log files. I need an install.log with debugging turned on.
Aha ok. I started install with "installer --debug" and it was the same as before, no added lines in install.log. By the way, is install.log saved anywhere or is it just a temporary thing?
It's saved into /var/log/install.log (or maybe it's /root/install.log) after the install completes. As for the debug, I guess the wrapper script doesn't pass on the commandline parameters. Open a terminal and run the following commands: sudo su - cd /opt/installer/fe/gtk ./gtkfe.py --debug

You're looking in install.log, right? That bit you pasted is from compile_output.log.
(In reply to comment #21) > You're looking in install.log, right? That bit you pasted is from > compile_output.log. > Yes it is. OK let's talk : I'm sure you want to do your best to correct the problem, on my side I really whant to help you get to the point. The install I do this morning from your suggestion > > sudo su - > cd /opt/installer/fe/gtk > ./gtkfe.py --debug > was launch into graphic (X client) and produce the same (or so I think) log of 5.5Mo that you said you have seen enough. From this I take the last significant part and paste it at the end of my answer. The log that is pointed by the message contains itself the same message. I have send the others suggested files with my first attachment, they have been produced the same since. If you need anything else, please tell Now I go to have grub look again the disk at partition 1 to have the old system to start. jonexy
Seriously, is it really *that* hard? I want /var/log/install.log with debugging enabled. I now have 3 copies of /tmp/compile_output.log, which all have the same information that I already know. These are 2 completely different files. Somebody, please give me an install.log with debugging or I'm closing this as WONTFIX out of frustration.
I tried sudo su - and so on and got an error: livecd gtk # ./gtkfe.py --debug /usr/lib64/python2.4/site-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:72: GtkWarning: could not open display warnings.warn(str(e), Okay, I reproduced this myself. It's due to a snapshot mismatch between what the CD was build with and what was included on the CD. This should be fixed in 2008.0_beta2

That is good news! I left install over night and today I managed to get install.log. I ran the "installer --debug" with root and I got command line installer. Previously I ran from a normal user and got GTK version. I attached the install.log if anyone is interested.

Then that's not the same bug. What ISO was this? Can you attach your install.log.failed?
Fails for me too .. 2008 beta2 on AMD 64 (DVD ISO downloaded today). I'm new to Gentoo, and have hit this same problem with beta2 on AMD64. I made a local copy of the installer tree into /tmp, and started to debug it a little. It looks like the problem starts in GLIPortage.create_binpkg_repo_from_vdb(). Wiping out my /tmp/fake_binpkg directory and reexecuting the command the installer uses yields to this exception: <Leading output removed; will attach full output> Performing Global Updates: /usr/portage/profiles/updates/2Q-2008 (Could take a couple of minutes if you have a lot of binary packages.) .='update pass' *='binary update' @='/var/db move' s='/var/db SLOT move' S='binary SLOT move' p='update /etc/portage/package.*' .... !!! Failed to move /var/db/pkg/media-gfx/gimp-print-4.2.7 to /var/db/pkg/net-print/gutenprint-4.2.7 !!! [Errno 30] Read-only file system Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 6971, in ? retval = emerge_main() File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 6647, in emerge_main if portage._global_updates(trees, mtimedb["updates"]): File "/usr/lib64/portage/pym/portage.py", line 9825, in _global_updates moves = vardb.move_ent(update_cmd) File "/usr/lib64/portage/pym/portage.py", line 6289, in move_ent _movefile(origpath, newpath, mysettings=self.settings) File "/usr/lib64/portage/pym/portage.py", line 4855, in _movefile raise portage_exception.PortageException( portage_exception.PortageException: mv '/var/db/pkg/media-gfx/gimp-print-4.2.7' '/var/db/pkg/net-print/gutenprint-4.2.7' This, in turn, causes GLIPortage.get_system_packages() to return "", which isn't handled well by it's caller. The caller then tries to install the "" package, which is why there's no package name after the error messages listed above. I've never used Gentoo before, so I'm not sure what is *supposed* to happen here, but I'm sure it's not trying to modify the read-only DVD image. Hopefully this info is helpful.
Created attachment 155143 [details] emerge output with exception Here's the full output of the emerge that causes the exception. It's downhill from this point for the installer. Generated with: PKGDIR-/tmp/fake_binpkg emerge -eqKp system > /tmp/emerge.out 2>&1

This should be fixed in 2008.0, which is now released.
