>this could be used as a traker bug It could. So file a bug for each of these cases, please. We have a hard working number of dedicated developers, but we really need people, who don't feel shy to work on the boring tasks like filing bugs, as well, and this includes you, as community member, too, of course... ...or does base-system folks want to fix them in one go?

As an ex gentoo devel I know how it goes , but as you say: > ...or does base-system folks want to fix them in one go? Waiting base system folks' ok for opening the requested bugs.
i imagine the bugs in question have already been filed/fixed it also takes general knowledge of the package in question in order to properly review the file to see if it can just be punted
(In reply to comment #3) > i imagine the bugs in question have already been filed/fixed Mmm I don't think so: $ ls /etc/modprobe.d blacklist irda pnp-aliases slmodem $ ls /etc/modules.d/ aliases alsa i386 lirc ndiswrapper nvidia ppp slmodem The only package that seems to be ported is slmodem. I'm going to open one bug for each of them.
As modules.d is depricated shouldn't all the options files be going into modprobe.d anyway? That would be the actual bug wouldn't it? Getting update-modules to put the module options files into the correct directory.
Seems like something that should be assigned to base-system to track.
ive got same problem like you localhost ~ # update-modules * Please file a bug about /etc/modules.d/alsa: it needs an /etc/modprobe.d/alsa * Please file a bug about /etc/modules.d/ipw3945d: it needs an /etc/modprobe.d/ipw3945d * Please file a bug about /etc/modules.d/ppp: it needs an /etc/modprobe.d/ppp * Updating modprobe.conf by hand ... but, i realize that i dont need the ipw3945d as my wifi driver is not that, i realize i once wrong install it, so i just unmerge it and remove the entry from /etc/modprobe.conf then doing update-modules again localhost ~ # update-modules * Updating modules.conf ... [ ok ] * Updating modules.dep ... [ ok ] localhost ~ # just try figure out about your driver and make sure about everything, cheers hope it helps

Please close bug 251081 as duplicate of this one. I'm not completely sure about bug 245879, but it is very likely also duplicate as the problem reported seems to stem from the old location of alsa configuration file.
Putting this in a comment so that people can find this bug directly: Please file a bug about /etc/modules.d/x86info: it needs an /etc/modprobe.d/x86info (using sys-apps/x86info-1.21)
this is a tracker. if you have a bug, you should be filing a new one.
This comment was related to bug 218526 which has already been marked as a duplicate of this bug. Sorry for the confusion.
you had 4 bugs there (one per file). as Carsten said when he dupped, looked at the Depends list here. there are bugs already for each one of those files.
About a week after my other comment (#5) it seems to have been fixed on my system. I know not how or with what package update, but fixed it is, every config file is repeated across to the other mod* dir.

It seems that alsaconf still uses modules.d to write its conf file. See bug# 251081
wanted to reopen http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213878#c9>comment 9 to bug 213878, but was not allowed to reopen it. x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-185.18.14 asked to file a new bug, i thought 213878 appropriate.
