sys-apps/hal-0.5.10 removed the powermanagement hooks and depend on pm-utils which does neither support uswusp nor tuxonice in the 0.99.4 release.

pm-utils git ebuild which supports uswsusp and tuxonice.

you also need to add a file to /etc/pm/config.d/
eg: cat /etc/pm/config.d/uswsusp 
SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp"

i should have added that the missing support of uswsusp or tuxonice in pm-utils-0.99.4 breaks the hibernation for some (most?) laptops in kde (see http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194873 ) and also gnome (at least i read that.. i dont use gnome myself)

Fixed with 1.1.1
