well... texlive's one seems to not ignore it. Is tetex's dvips supposed to support this ? Anyway, I really recommend you migrate to texlive which, unlike tetex, is not outdated. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/tex/texlive-migration-guide.xml
The dvips in any distribution is supposed to support this; at least that's what the man and info pages for dvips indicate. Also, it did work in tetex at some point. Unfortunately, I don't know when it stopped working, it could be a while back, I use pdflatex these days for most things. I'll happily follow the recommendation to migrate to texlive, but only after it becomes officially unmasked. Thanks.
