Description Mark 2008-02-01 21:08:35 UTC
A recent change has made xdm refuse to start if acpi is not compiled in the kernel. This is not required as it worked fine before, and after the change.

All that needs to be done is to remove 'acpid' from line 54 and all is good.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.dont have acpi in the kernel
2.try to start xdm

Actual Results:
it wouldnt start becasue acpi was not compiled into the kernel

Expected Results:

Huh?! use acpid != requires ACPI compiled into kernel. Post your Xorg.0.log.

xorg log

Heres the log, sorry forgot to mention [like a fool] that i'm using kdm

Comment 4 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-01 22:55:06 UTC
Well, that log clearly shows your xorg-server starts perfectly fine. Unless you have something more to tell us, closing this bug.
Comment 5 Mark 2008-02-01 23:05:32 UTC
It starts fine because i removed 'acpi' from the line i mention in /etc/init.d/xdm, before it refused to start with a EWARN (could be wrong with the keyword, but you know what i mean) like message saying it needs acpi compiled into the kernel to work, which it doesn't, hence a bug, with a simple fix, thought you might want to know.
Comment 6 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-01 23:07:20 UTC
Post the output you get from whatever, since clearly xdm doesn't check for anything in kernel at all.
Comment 7 Mark 2008-02-02 14:43:50 UTC
with line 54 in /etc/ini.d xdm like (default)
  use acpid consolekit hald xfs

snoopy mythtv # /etc/init.d/xdm start
 * ACPI support has not been compiled into the kernel

if i change line 54 to:
   use consolekit hald xfs

starts up fine
Comment 8 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-02 14:47:14 UTC
Well, I'm tired of this, you failed to post any relevant error whatsoever. If you are referring to the ACPI check in /etc/init.d/acpid, then do *NOT* install or enable sys-power/acpid if you lack ACPI support in kernel which is totally obvious.

Comment 9 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-02 14:49:05 UTC
Fixing summary accordingly and closing, do NOT reopen this bug.
