Description Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-01-27 15:45:34 UTC
Never got unmasked, and is included in 2.6.24 kernels now.

Seems that iwlwifi-1.2.23 would be needed:

Also, seing Changelog, seems that iwlwifi has still a lot of bugs that are being fixed with newer versions. I would prefer preserve this ebuild for being able to update easily this driver

Thanks a lot

I have contacted iwlwifi devs, they told me that the in kernel version is really 1.1.17, so please bump iwlwifi in portage to 1.2.25. This damn old version is a bit too buggy. Would be nice if the ebuild could apply the LED patch for iwlwifi (could be found on there mailing lists).

Folks, why don't you push the updates to kernel upstream? This is a completely wrong way of doing things.

don't ask me. The iwlwifi devs currently also unwilling to hand out patches
against current kernel release. Say told me either to wait until the work has
been committed to kernel git and was kicked out the door by Linus, or use there
tar.gz

I think that, for now, "ebuild" way would be better because iwlwifi has a lot of problems, then, would be better being able to test newer iwlwifi version without needing to update iwlwifi kernel version

Hello,
I absolutely want to use portage iwlwifi drivers, because of many bugs in the kernel version. My card often disassociates from the AP. The LED is not the first priority at the moment, even though it would be nice to have it working, but I can't emerge iwlwifi drivers.
Shall I do something before emerging them again? (I used portage iwlwifi drivers
until 2.6.23 kernel was installed on my system).
I obviously deselected iwlwifi drivers in the kernel configuration, before emerging the one in portage.

Thank you.

Just noticed this bug and discussion here... To make thing even more complicated, I add that personally I have completely different experience with in kernel drivers. Previously with kernel 2.6.23 I had very awful networking speed with iwlwifi (and iwl3945, btw). The only driver which worked fine was windows driver (used trough ndiswrapper, of course). Upgrade to gentoo-sources-2.6.24 and in kernel driver fixed speed issues and now everything works fine. Hurray! That's on thinkpad X60, AFAIR.

Do not remove this package. The driver is updated frequently and kernel releases cant keep up with the newer version of this driver!
I want to use this driver package!
Please bump to 1.2.25!

Comment 11 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-27 16:32:19 UTC
http://intellinuxwireless.org/ states:

Note: The iwlwifi driver has been merged into mainline kernel since 2.6.24. If you are using kernels after this release, please use the intree (drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi) driver directly. After 2.6.26 the intree driver iwlagn also supports the new 5100BG, 5100ABG, 5100AGN, 5300AGN and 5350AGN series hardwares.

So we have to remove this package from the tree. But probably we need (as suggested by intel) to add compate-wireless package. See bug 234139.
Comment 12 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-01-27 16:38:32 UTC
Finally removed from the tree.
