it seems its not duplicate of 190653 and others which fail during the emerge.
i get errs like:
rsync: failed to set times on "/home/insta/cro/stim/figs/cumul.mu.ps": Function not implemented (38)

during syncing. i have upgraded from rsync-2.6.9-r3 to r5 recently, but i doubt
its this change which causes the problem, because downgrading back to r3 does not work. it may be other package interfering, but i have no clue which one.
