there's code in postrm in the ebuild that reads: # If stale docs, and one isn't re-emerging the latest version, removes # (this is actually a portage bug, though) [[ -n ${PF} && ! -f ${ROOT}/usr/$(get_libdir)/${PN}/en.msg ]] && \ rm -rf "${ROOT}"/usr/share/doc/${PF} Unfortunately en.msg doesn't exist for me, and I am remerging. So the install ends up wiping out the docs dir.

As the log clearly shows, no docs are deleted.
The log doesn't show it, because this happens in postrm and not output is printed for it. I can assure you that when emerge terminates the /usr/share/doc/samba-3.0.26a directory does not exist!
