Description Andrew Somerville 2007-10-21 17:51:57 UTC
When upgrading my system, emerge installs the newer media-libs/flac-1.1.4, however, when I run revdep-rebuild it downgrades me again to media-libs/1.1.2-r8.

$ emerge -p flac

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild U ] media-libs/flac-1.1.4 [1.1.2-r8]

Then when revdep-rebuild is run flac is again downgraded to 1.1.2-r8 saying something like:

!!! Multiple versions within a single package slot have been
!!! pulled into the dependency graph:

('ebuild', '/', 'media-libs/flac-1.1.2-r8', 'merge') pulled in by
 ('installed', '/', 'media-plugins/gst-plugins-flac-0.8.12', 'nomerge')

('installed', '/', 'media-libs/flac-1.1.4', 'nomerge') pulled in by
  ('installed', '/', 'media-sound/hydrogen-0.9.4_pre20070428', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'media-sound/vorbis-tools-1.1.1-r5', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'media-sound/sox-13.0.0', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'kde-base/kaudiocreator-3.5.7', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'media-plugins/gst-plugins-flac-0.10.5', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'media-libs/libsndfile-1.0.17', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'media-libs/akode-2.0.2', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'kde-base/kdemultimedia-kioslaves-3.5.7', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'media-libs/sdl-sound-1.0.1-r2', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'media-sound/soundkonverter-0.3.4', 'nomerge')
  ('installed', '/', 'media-libs/tunepimp-0.5.3', 'nomerge')
  ('ebuild', '/', 'media-sound/audacity-1.3.3', 'merge')
  ('ebuild', '/', 'media-libs/xine-lib-1.1.7', 'merge')

Masking the older version seems to break a whole lot of things, so I suspect a better course of action would be to make the newer version (1.1.4) until everything works with it.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -u flac
2. revdep-rebuild

Actual Results:
These steps repeated lead to perpetual breakage of many things depending on flac.

Expected Results:
The upgraded version of flac should not be downgraded again by revdep-rebuild, or should be masked so it is not upgraded in the first place.

media-plugins/gst-plugins-flac-0.8.12 is not in tree anymore, unsupported, please uninstall.
Comment 2 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-10-21 18:06:25 UTC
media-plugins/gst-plugins-flac-0.8.12 doesn't exist, unmerge it and all other gstreamer 0.8 ebuilds you have installed.

Sorry about the output in the initial posting. I was being lazy so I posted similar output from a paste-bin. Just added the log of the actual revdep-rebuild.

Here's my emerge --info

So upgrade to media-libs/sdl-sound-1.0.1-r2; this is not a support forum, please move more questions to #gentoo or
Comment 6 Andrew Somerville 2007-10-21 18:34:53 UTC
You misunderstand me. The output in my original report was inaccurate. My packages aren't actually out of date. See attachment.

As already said above, upgrade it to -r2 and you won't have any issue with flac dependency. And now please leave this bug alone.
