Description Daniel Tourde 2007-09-27 10:15:04 UTC
Hello,

I am trying to build and install Salome 3.2.6 (http://www.salome-platform.org) on Gentoo Linux. Salome needs VTK 4 but the only VTK available now is VTK 5. It is a fairly difficult (and _very_ time consuming) task to adapt Salome to VTK5 (see http://www.salome-platform.org/forum/?groupid=10&forumid=9&thread=1592) where Salome developers basically say VTK 4 - Salome 3, VTK 5 - Salome 4 (which has not been released yet).

So here is my question:
- Can't we have VTK 4 and VTK 5 slotted? Applications needing VTK 4 would use it, the others would use VTK 5. That would simplify the work of many VTK-based application-packagers. I know VTK 4.2 was a problem but what about 4.4?

I found on the internet an ebuild for VTK 4.4.2 (I don't know what it is worth though) : http://www.3miasto.net/~ortylp/ gentoo/sci-libs/vtk/vtk-4.4.2.ebuild

Reproducible: Always

Nothing in the tree needs this, third-party apps are not our problem, sorry.
