Description Jose daLuz 2007-07-18 23:56:08 UTC
Updating beryl-plugins from 0.2.1 to 0.2.1-r1, I hit this error:

This happens whether I eselect nvidia or xorg-x11 as the opengl implementation.

emerge x11-proto/glproto; plus, eselect-opengl always tries to symlink this, shouldn't it be RDEPEND for virtual/opengl instead?

I already have that:
$ sudo emerge -1 glproto beryl-plugins

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ..... ..... ..... ....... done!
[ebuild R ] x11-proto/glproto-1.4.8 USE="-debug" 0 kB
[ebuild U ] x11-plugins/beryl-plugins-0.2.1-r1 [0.2.1] USE="dbus" 0 kB

Re-emerging it, however, fixed this problem. I rebuilt toolchain/system/world last Sunday after updating to the latest glibc and linux-headers, perhaps something funky happened during that marathon.

Nice to see you back, Jakob!

Even nicer if I spelled your name correctly, Jakub ;-)

23:24:46 <@dberkholz> jakub: you kinda have a point on 185816#c1 but i'd like to find a way to keep the proto's out of RDEPEND whenever possible
23:27:55 <@jakub> dberkholz: oh well, maybe eselect-compiler should RDEPEND on it instead... ? some apps actually require the correct symlink there, not a dangling one :)
23:41:27 <@dberkholz> jakub: sure they do, but at compile time, not runtime
23:41:54 <@dberkholz> jakub: if they have a build time dep, they should probably DEPEND on it, don't you think?
23:44:54 <@dberkholz> jakub: hmm. if we make sure that apps DEPEND rather than RDEPEND on eselect-opengl, then we should be able to have eselect-opengl RDEPEND on glproto
23:45:50 <@jakub> dberkholz: hmm, sounds like a plan :)
23:49:29 <@dberkholz> jakub: could you do me a favor and paste my comment into the bug?
Comment 5 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-07-30 08:16:52 UTC
I fixed up the deps appropriately for eselect-opengl and glproto. But any package requiring glproto still needs to DEPEND on it -- I've just ensured that eselect-opengl will always be present if glproto is present.

beryl was removed...
